One way we miss Opportunities

I am a “get it done” kind of guy.  If you have ever been around me you know how hyper and focused on the goal I can be. This is how I work and play.  People will not invite me to fish or play basketball because of the danger to those around.  A friend uses the phrase “Go. Go. Go.- Do. Do. Do” to describe me. Recently on a mission experience this caught up with me.  We were installing cook stoves in huts in the Mayan Village.  Our team of 6 was trained on the first install, then we took off.  Because of the language barrier we had to have Mayan to Spanish then Spanish to English translators. This really slowed down the install and increased the amount of people in the hut.  As we would install the cook stoves, more and more Mayans would gather around to watch, averaging about 25 people in the small space. Fathers and Sons

My wife has ‘adopted’ a cardinal family that lives in a tree behind our home.  I think she was originally wooed by the distinct, shrill chirp and vibrant colors of the male in the bright, morning sun.  It has been a delight to watch the “husband and wife” flit about our yard, drink from the birdbath, and dine at the feeder that hangs from another tree.  But even more inspiring has been playing witness to our feathered couple as they raise up a young male into adulthood. When the little one was first born, we watched as the mother took on the bulk of the work – gathering food and tending to the needs of her son.  But as he has grown older and is now in need of the training and discipline necessary to become a self-sufficient, adult bird, it has been the father who has taken over.  That transition in care has been as formational as it has been fascinating.  A very vivid reminder of the responsibilities...
