Exponential 2013 – A Reflection

Exponential 2013 – A Reflection

This week I had the privilege of joining some of the LN team at the Exponential 2013 Conference in Orlando, Florida.  Over 5000 Kingdom-minded leaders came together for three days at the ‘largest gathering of church planters in the world’.  It was an exciting and energizing atmosphere, with great speakers, inspiring worship, and entertaining after-hours meet-ups of pastors and vendors.  Oh, and did I mention it was held in Orlando?

This morning I had breakfast with a friend, minister, and former coworker at a church in Keller, TX (yes, we had to travel across the IMG_1647[1]country to have breakfast together), to catch up on life and ministry.  Jim came to Exponential, not because he’s looking to plant a church, but because this was a crowd he wanted to be around.  Their church, the Heritage Church of Christ,  has recently embarked on a journey to take a congregation with a long past into a new future driven by the mission of the Church – to do whatever it takes to reach those far from God.  We talked about the excitement of this adventure, as well as the expected and unexpected obstacles that come with such change.  Exponential provided an opportunity to be in the midst of people sold out to the same mission, and to learn from those who are committed to equipping and encouraging those on the journey.

The conference experience is different for me now than it was when I was on staff with a local church.  In the past I attended conferences to add new tools to my toolbelt, connect with fellow travelers, and gain encouragement and inspiration for the far journey.  Now, while I do learn and am encouraged, my primary goal is to connect with leaders that we can equip and encourage as part of our mission at Leadership Network.  I come to serve others.  And I love it!  What excites me most about Exponential is to see the thousands of leaders who aren’t encumbered by tradition or weighed down with baggage from the past, but who are fully looking ahead toward the amazing mission God has called them on.

What About You?

Were you are Exponential this year?  I’d love to hear about your experience and what you took away.
