Facing the Test with Perseverance
On Saturday my son and I had the privilege of attending an upper belt test at our Lake Arlington Karate Academy. It was an amazing show of skill, discipline, and focus. About a dozen brown belts, ranging from around 10 to 50 years old, performed a myriad of katas, blocks, kicks, punches, and self-defense moves over the 3-hour test. They also engaged in several rounds of sparring and board breaking, much to the delight of the crowd of family, friends, pupils, and peers.
One of the most impressive things to me that day was the show of perseverance. Certainly, to even get to that level requires a great deal of sacrifice and determination. During the test, however, each individual’s perseverance took center stage. Whether it was gutting out a long, intense, endurance-testing series of complicated moves, recovering from failed attempts at breaking boards, or enduring round after round of painful one-on-one, and even two-on-one, sparring, I was moved by the strong wills that prevailed over burning lungs, bruised ribs, and bouts of tears. Saturday I was proud to be among those who faced the test with perseverance. I look forward to facing my own test soon as well.
