Welcome to My Journey!

Well, here we are.  On a journey.

I’ll spare the long intro about who I am (most of you probably already know something about me).  You can learn more on the About Me page if you’d like.  But here’s the brief background that is relevant to this blog.  This year I turn 40.  Not that big of a deal to me, really.  But being someone who has always been relatively health-conscious as well as a person with a family history of health issues (cancer), and being a guy with a family that he’d like to hang out with as much as he can, this year I’m motivated to develop a healthy, balanced, long-term lifestyle.

Perhaps like you, I’ve tried a lot of different approaches to healthy weight loss and maintenance over the years.  Some of them have been effective.  Others not so much.  I’ve tried to stick with ones that emphasize the “big three” in a balanced way – diet, exercise, and rest.  The one that always seems to kick me in the pants, the one that accounts for 70% of all of this (I’ve been told, and tend to agree), is the nutrition piece.  Hey, I like to eat.  Enough said.

So, this year I’m paying attention to all three.  But for the immediate purpose of this blog, I’m going to focus on the nutrition side.  I’ve enlisted a new ally based on the personal experience and recommendation of a friend.  Starting today I am taking on the Advocare 24-day Challenge.  It involves a 10-day cleanse followed by a 14-day ‘max nutrition’ phase to flush the junk out of my system and get me started on a lifelong journey of health and wellness.

Why the blog?  I’ve never chronicled much of my personal experience.  I’m pretty reserved.  Some would say hard to get to know.  My goal is to ‘journal’ the experience of the 24-day Challenge as a method of accountability for me.  But hopefully this will be an encouragement to someone else looking to make some changes to their health.  And, perhaps I’ll keep going beyond the 24 days to share my experience with some of the exercises (and sleep!) goals I have in mind for 2013.  No promises there, however.
